K-1 World GP 2004 Results: K-1 Owns Boxing

The results of the K-1 World GP held on June 6 in Nagoya are in.

In all of the three featured bouts that pitted boxers against K-1 fighters, under K-1 rules, the K-1 fighters came out victorious.

The boxers in question could hardly be considered elite representatives of their sport. Two of them, Ray Mercer and Francois Botha, are well past their prime and the third, Arthur Willams, is currently the 93rd ranked crusierweight in the world. Willams was apparently a replacement for Vassily Jirov who K-1 had previously advertised for the event, despite Jirov's managment publicly stating that he would not be appearing.

In contrast the K-1 representatives were some of the best K-1 has to offer, Musashi, Remy Bonjasky, and Alexey Ignashov.

An interesting sidenote is Mercer has an iron-clad bout agreement with ESPN 2 to fight DaVarryl Williamson on June 8, just two days after his fight with Musashi. Mercer faces possible legal trouble if he is unable to fight due to his K-1 appearance.

to be brutally honest i think boxing just cant roll in the same circle as K-1. boxing is a part of K-1, but K-1 is not a part of boxing. by that i mean K-1 fighters use boxing punches all the time, whereas boxers dont use kicks or knees at all.

having said that, the K-1 line up is far more impressive than the boxers they had. until they actually sign up good boxers, not has beens like botha, its always going to look like this.

Williams was way out of his league. Ignoshov's leg kicks knocked Williams off his feet just about every time. Also, after he got kicked in the head and then knocked down, it was pretty clear that Williams didn't want to be there any more.

When K-1 contracts some real boxers in their prime, then I will take time out of my day to watch them. If they keep using washed up, second rate boxers, I will remain completely unimpressed.

What do you guys think about Tyson fighting Sapp? personally I think Tyson will tear his nuts off and cram them down his throat.

easily. thats a fight i wouldnt pay to see because id blink and miss it. I dont think K-1 is going to throw him some meat in the form of sapp though, they love him too much. My guess is either a complete tomato can or one of the best.

To be honest, I didn't really like Tom Erikson but until he went to K-1 he showed more improvement then in Pride/MMA.
