I think its Hawking smurfing as someone else to see if anyone leaked his secret time travel information...

    Kato,

That assumes that we exist in the future. No evidence of that one yet, and if things keep going the way they're going, we probably won't. I predict that giant tsunami will wipe out the east coast with 4,000 years - saw it on the Discovery channel the other day. At any rate, some sort of natural catastrophe is going to wipe us out long before time travel is discovered.

My money's on a Pole Shift, displacing the earth's crust and wiping out 90% of life in one swoop. According to the Myan calendar, we're due for one in Dec. 2012.

But hey, I'll be out of my prime by then anyway so I guess it won't matter.

The pole has shifted many times in Earth's history without displacing the crust. Why would this one suddenly throw it out of wack? It would screw up our communications and navigation (though that's mostly by sattelite and not compass these days), but the crust, I don't know about that one.

My bet would be a giant astroroid hitting the earth and whippiing out us out. Then again we dont need no astroroid to do that we doing a pretty good job ourselves.

The shift Phrost is talking about is a 180o shift. Picture a magnet pinned at its centre, then bring another magnet close to it, like poles facing. See how quick the magnet spins? Now, The Earth is a thin spherical shell of rock and water with an iron core, with a lot of liquid in between (read: lubricant). What do you think will happen when the iron ball inside spins?

Again, what I'm saying is that this has already happened several times in earth's history. In fact, it happens about every 20,000 years or so (or some order of magnitude there-of). You're not talking about putting TWO magnets together, as you have described, you're talking about the polarity of a single giant magnet changing. It's a different animal altogether.

So your proposing that this change would not cause the Earth to spin? Is it not our magnetic field which determines our alignment with the plane of the solar system?
