Hapkido is a korean martial art that includes strikes, throws, and joint locks. It was founded by Young Shul Choi in 1945. Choi was student of Sokaku Takeda, the thrity-second patriarch of Daito-ryu Aikijutsu. Young Shul Choi and aikido founder, Morihei Ueshiba were both students of Takeda, thus similar looking techinqes between hapkido and aikido. The main difference is philiosphy, aikido is mostly defensive where hapkido has many offensive techniques.
I hope that helps. -

History aside, Hapkido combines the best of both hard and soft fighting concepts. It is also easy to incorporate other fighting styles and techniques with Hapkido without compromising or confusing your workout.
Been a practitioner of Hapkido for some 15 years out of my nearly 30 in the arts, and continue to love every minute of training and teaching. -
