Hating Italians would be extremely racist, please hate immigrants instead.

More seriously, I think that there is a kind of cultural misunderstanding at work here. I think that in Europe the dominant form of racism is the "hate the immigrant" thing, whereas in the USA the dominant form of racism is the result of earlier slavery and then segregation, so when McGregor says something like "I can't be racist because I'm Irish" he is basically misunderstanding the imputation of racism moved to him.
I came to this conclusion some years ago when I read on social media of a case when an Italian salesperson working in Switzerland was accused by Oprah Winfrey of racism, and basically answered "I can't be racist, I'm Italian". I context she meant that she was an immigrant and so she was more likely to be the victim of (european style) discrimination, but this answer made no sense from the point of view of the american view of discrimination.
Basically while europeans were the worst in term of enslaving and generally harassing other populations for a long historical period, we didn't have a resident slave population that later was freed but segregated, so I think that the american view on racism is difficult to understand from the point of view of an european.

Nope, some guys from where you are from invaded, enslaved and stole our things about 2 thousand years ago.

You must feel guilty about that.

I've got no time for an article talking about a controversy when it won't lay out what actually happened.
