Boxing gloves screw up your fist?

Last night my friend was telling me about some of the people he used to train Muay Thai with out in Calgary, and how one of the competitors got in a street fight. He said that the fighter took down his attacker in one shot, but while breaking the guy's face he also broke his hand. My friend also says that boxing gloves screwed up the way he held his own hands while fighting without them, so his fists were no longer properly closed until he actively corrected it.

Has anyone else found that training with wraps/tape/boxing gloves on your hands messes up their natural fist after awhile? What about grip bars on MMA gloves?

I have a pair of 14oz gloves and closed-palm/grip bar MMA gloves. I intend to do bagwork with wraps only. The bag is 75lbs-100lbs and made of canvas and sand.

I thought sand bags were only for kicking?

I could be mistaken, but it's an Everlast bag so it's definately not for kicking only.

I train on the bag with and without gloves to prevent that from happening.

It won't "weaken" your hand/wrist. It will make your Punch sronger than your unprotected hand can handle. All you really have to do thoguh is hit the heavybag bare-knuckled every once in awhile to maintain the correct angle and be used to hitting that way. I hit with no wraps or gloves at all at least once a week.

WhiteShark is correct.

Punching a guy in the head with the most "proper" fist in the world is still likely to break your hand.

just use light gloves on the bag and you'll be fine ... the pride type ...

That's what bag gloves are for. Boxing gloves do pad your hand a bit much but you shouldn't be punching somebody in the face full force with a non padded fist anyway. This is why Tank could hit people so hard in the beginning......ah well and what some of the other guys said.

i use a pair of light leather gloves for the bag just to protect myskin from getting cut up....
they have this cool form fitting grip and breathing holes for sweat, the brand is some weird french brand: isotoner? i think
