BJ Penn stripped of UFC Welterweight Title

    http://www.ufc.tv/articles/news/allNews.asp

LAS VEGAS, NV, May 17, 2004…. Zuffa, LLC, owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship®, announced that due to BJ Penn’s reported signing with the K-1 organization, Penn would no longer compete in UFC® events. Additionally, Penn’s actions have resulted in him being stripped of his title.

“I am looking forward to moving on and crowning a champion,” stated UFC president, Dana White.

An announcement will be made soon regarding who will compete for the welterweight championship.
This is a major problem for the UFC. They now only have one title holder, for their 5 weight divisions. To make matters worse that one champ is Vitor, who "won" the title in his non-fight with Couture.

    WTF.

Damn, that is sad that they can't keep a great fighter like Penn. I would've loved to see a rematch with a motivated and ready Matt Hughes.

IMO ( and I don't know anything about marketing UFC) , this is the stupidest thing they could do, especially since K-1 is a japanese organization. And if their welterweight champ wins in K-1, it just makes them look good. Well, I think it's even stupider when you have NO champions. Oh well, maybe the rematch of "one of the most legendary and controversial decisions in ufc history", Baroni vs. Tanner, will get people intersted in the sport, or that legendary rematch between Shamrock and Kimo, man that'll get people intersted:rolleyes: HEY UFC! 1996 called, and they want their main event back! Holy ****! what happened to this so called new MMA renassiance era, where the new well rounded MMA fighters whoop ass on the old days.

Maybe ever since they got burned in Pride from Chuck Lidell losing to Rampage, they've put an end to interpromotional stuff, or maybe they are just a controlling organization, I don't know.

I think the UFC wanted to keep Penn, at least until he dropped the title, and probably did everything they could to keep him. He is the one that chose to go elsewhere. If there was any chance BJ would be fighting again in the UFC I don't think this would have happeed. You can't have a champion that refuses to fight in your promotion.

    K-1? There's something I'm missing. Does K-1 sponsor a MMA venue?

It's not about their champs losing, or interpromotional match-ups. The UFC wants the UFC champions to fight on UFC PPV's against UFC opponents. Plain and simple. And there is nothing wrong with that.

K-1 has started having MMA rules matches along with their normal K-1 fights. There are soon having there first MMA only fight card.
