    Hell yeah! Hell no!
Er.. Largo method with a knife in a nutshell.

    Evasion evasion evasion.

You need to practice mad elastico and reterada drills. You need to duel both with
a trainer knife and without (against opponents who do the same). Knife fights aren't
duels but the reflexes it builds are priceless.
You need to learn to cut as you backstep, you also need to know how to destroy
a limb as you step back. It needs to be instinctive.
You need to know how to gut an unarmed opponent, this will help you
know what to cover and avoid when you have no weapon.
You must develop the reflex to RUN THE **** AWAY.
Corto mano is a game for suicidal peoples (sorry to the corto bros around).
Your first reflex must be to get out of the way. Not to block, not to close,
    but to get away.
Largo mano says .. avoid the opponent , hit/cut only a few times, but
take none to yourself in any event. (As opposed to trying to get lots of
    hits from close in)
Don't worry about disarms, locks, or even setting up cool hubud-lubud
type **** in a real knife fight. Back The **** Up!
Stay alive. Cut and run. If you can't run, cut and back away. He has to
get his hand out in front to try and cut you, so cut him then and stay away.

    Largo mano in a nutshell.

BTW I do not train sayoc kali so this idea may be similar to their thoughts,
    dissimilar or anything in between).
let's talk about why fat-fu shall we?

I went out drinking tonight and ended up argueing knife defenses with some newb karate kid and experienced wing chun guy.

We argued the importance of avoiding/blocking/not getting hit the first strike. He seemed to insist that a well trained defender should be able to take a non lethal slash and continue. He mentioned that at his school they train with real knifes! I've trained knife defenses but never with real knives. Got me wondering if this is common??

He even insisted that one time a fellow student got his arm slashed during a drill and still managed to subdue his opponent by following the defence.

I was ready to scream bullshido until he showed me a couple of defenses including one where i held a knife (dull edge facing in) to his throat. Produced a pretty cool defense and left me wondering....
