    Paul Chau bjj black belt

    Taken from http://www.northernblackdragon.com/#...jiu-jitsu/c2q4

Does anyone know whether Paul Chau has got a BJJ black belt and his lineage?
Note that he's explicitly teaching BJJ (as opposed to JJJ) and wearing a black belt in the above photo.
Another bullshido mention of him here http://www.bullshido.net/forums/show...l=1#post920873

Here's a video of him ripping off Keenan, although he's apparently had "a great deal of success with this choke for years".
Very awkward and unfamiliar movements, and he definitely doesn't move like a BJJ black belt.

So there are two factors, ability and lineage. This guy apparently has lineage via Gringo. The question then becomes what Gringo's standards are. Is this a student of his, or did this man purchase an affiliation? I recommend buying a black belt/affiliation from Gringo. If he sells you one, then that tells you all you need to know about his students. If not, then ask him about the guy. And ask the guy.

Though honestly, no footage and no googleable record isnt a good sign.

How is he ripping off Keenan ? That choke entry/application has been around for a lot longer than Keenan is years old.

Yeah that choke is older than BJJ.
While he moves a little on the sloppy side and isn't super smooth he is an older gentleman.
His sleeve grip is a little suspect though.
Its a lot more like a grip you would get in Judo standing up than you get in modern BJJ ground work. Even that isn't enough to judge his skill or lineage on.
Of the single rapier fight between valiant men, having both skill, he that is the best wrestler, or if neither of them can wrestle, the strongest man most commonly kills the other, or leaves him at his mercy.

This is from his front page:

"I would break down each segment of the meaning of Jiu jitsu or Jujitsu. In Chinese, Jiu or Ju(柔) means softness, gentleness; Jitsu(術); art or way"

Is this correct? Does it mean the same in Chinese as it does in Japanese?

According to google translate his chinese symbols mean Rou Shu.

I asked a fellow grad student one time (who was Chinese) to translate the kanji for Judo... she said "Willow School or way".

Maybe it has, although its recent popularity in bjj is due almost entirely to Keenan's video. The rigid awkward way Chau's performing it suggests that he hasn't been doing it long, and that he's probably just repackaging other people's stuff to generate online content.

Kanji/hanzi often have entirely different meanings and pronunciations depending on context.
The characters for "ju/jiu" = "soft, gentle etc", "do" = "way or path", and "jitsu" = "skill", in that context.
