@ ronin: I did Judo, I did full-contact Karate........ and although judo is MUCH more easy on you pain-wise (yes, it hurts, but getting pummeled the hell out of you hurts even more), I somehow have the feeling its more cardio-oriented (like you're panting like a walrus after it)... cannot speak about other grappling arts though.
On Topic: Well the old-timers as far as I know it, said something like: Train every day, but make the training easy enough so you can train daily without killing yourself. -

Im generally of the opinion that you really have no idea what you body is capable of going through in terms of training and it can far exceed what you think is a limit..
MT class intensity = 8-9 i felt on the verge of collapsing a few times..
Karate intensity = 4 a cake walk
self training intensity = 6 i push myself hard but dont go for a long time..
if i dont sweat a fair bit and have muscle pains the next few days i feel its not good training.. usually im blasting through with muscle pains already but the adreniline takes care of that while im working out..
Intensity definatly is the key though.. (mostly obvious to members here i think)
Its kinda funny the way i view the body, kind like a 3rd person.. and if i want mine to respect me i know i have to go hard.. the body respects stress nothing else really.. id think that if u trained 2 - 3 hours a day in a casual manner it would be good for your health but not much more..
so go blitzgrieg and have fun doing it..
