My thoughts exactly.
They do work, and are less likely to tear your knuckles up. Plus you can deliever more and take more pain. If you palm strike something hard by accident, you are least likely to hurt the hand than if you punch something hard.

As soon as I saw the thread title I had a little video playing in my head of Bas pimp-slappin his way to victory.

The problem is, in terms of self-defense, if you don't drill them regularly (as Kempocos alluded to) you wouldn't use them. "Train the way you fight, fight the way you train." Make sure to practice them consistently.

I have taken scores of palm strikes in open hand only MMA matches and have never been stunned or bloodied.
In closed fist MMA matches I almost always come out bloody even if I take only a couple of shots.
Fists cause ALOT more damage.
Sure, on occasion you land wrong and your fist is broken the next day.But it is rarely a factor during a fight.
And I have bent my fingers backwards doing palm strikes more than once.
Yes, Bas Rutten can finish a guy with a palm strike.
But most any strong chump can end a fight with a fist that lands clean.

Strong Machine does have a point. Frank Shamrock taunting Bas Ruten and daring him to hit him comes to mind. I don't think Frank would have done the same thing if closed fists were alllowed.
Still most people can't take a hit like a boxer or MMA fighter and I truly feel a palm will serve you just fine in most situations the average person is likely to encounter.

Simple enough, really: Hit a heavy bag with palm. See how you can deliver force this way. Train it up a little. If it's not looking useful, stop.
Me, I find that my fists hit harder, but that my palms hit purty damn hard. I like my chances of not breaking bones, too.
I would liken it to the boxing or the muay thai of internal kung fu, even though that's like calling apples the oranges of the apple world. --WalkOn

palm strike also looks less agressive than compared to a punch(if u ever have to defend ur actions in court)

The reason that most palm heels feel "weaker" than fists, is because MOST people slap and don't "punch" with their palm heel.
I have seen some people hit the bag with their palms, its a sad sight.
Slap, slap, and more slap...
Its a palm HEEL.

I like palm strikes, but the problem is that you are supposed to keep your fingers straight up while striking, and mine tend to go down in a 60 angle.
That civilisation may not sink,
Its great battle lost,
Quiet the dog, tether the pony
To a distant post;

Where the maps are spread,
His eyes fixed upon nothing,
A hand under his head.
