I say makikomi because that is, for whatever reason, what people normally associate with "Georgian".

You'd be surprised (maybe) at how many judoka don't know anything if much about sambo...in any case, I get where you are coming from.

That is especially the case in the US.

Something I always say, which Steve vehemently disagrees with, but Gregg strongly agrees with, is that:

You can know judo without knowing sambo, but you cannot know sambo without knowing judo.

Interesting. Looks like something that pairs nicely with Tani Otoshi using that over the back grip. Secure the grip, look for Tani Otoshi, if they sprawl their hips back, step in for this throw.

It's less flashy but I prefer my Sumi Gaeshi from this position.

Igor showed it as a secondary attack, after your initial uchi mata fails.

I hit it when people steeple away from me, after I've nailed an o goshi or koshi guruma earlier in sparring, and they are avoiding the hip fight.

Exactly. I use it (Sumie Gaeshi/hikkomi gaeshi) more often after Uchi Mata, as my body position is already inside. It work especially good if they "steeple" as you put it, or hip block and turn sideways a bit, trying to cut the hikite grip.

Of course, you can just lock them up with the grip and put pressure to their offside front corner and feel for the pressure in the opposite direction, too.

There is another one I have used off of Uchi Mata that is a bit odd...first saw it in an old judo book back in the late '80s. I think it was Okano Sensei book (one of my old sensei had it in his collection...worth a lot of money now, LOL). It involved an entire grip/posture/action/reaction sequence and was considered a skillful entry to ne waza back then.

I suppose you could look at it like that, but sambo is a direct derivative of Kodokan judo. Blended with some indigenous wrestling, of course.

And not coincidentally, IMO, almost every single world-level sambo player got their start as a cadet or junior international competitor in judo.
