Father Gets Probation For Making Son Walk Home From School

    http://news.yahoo.com/father-gets-pr...180209763.html

A Hawaii man has been sentenced to a year of probation after making his son walk a mile home from school.
Robert Demond was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

Demond explained that his son had been involved in some sort of rule-breaking at school. When Demond picked him up, he asked about it, but his son refused to respond. Demond then stopped the car and told his son to walk to rest of the way home to think about what he had done, reports the Garden Island.

The judge, Kathleen Watanabe, ruled that the punishment was “old-fashioned” and inappropriate. She said that it is dangerous for children to walk alongside the road due to potential pedophiles. It was a form of punishment no longer supported by the community.

Demond was sentenced to a $200 fine and a year of probation. His son’s age was never revealed in court documents.
Anyone have more information on this?
The kids age would be helpful.

    A mile? In Hawaii?

    ****'s sake.

I walked about a mile to school in upstate NY. Then, after school, I had wrestling practice, then, I walked home (after dark).

The judge, Kathleen Watanabe, ruled that the punishment was “old-fashioned” and inappropriate. She said that it is dangerous for children to walk alongside the road due to potential pedophiles.
**** you, you dumb ****. All violent crime, including assault on children, is at an all-time low. Uneducated people who buy the 24 hour news station's blathering without analysis are understandable, but you are a fucking judge, and this information is not so much at your fingertips, but rammed down your throat.

Holy ****. You mean pedophiles didn't exist in "old fashioned" times.

Nope. Pedophiles never existed before shows like To Catch a Predator were put on the air to make parents and communities paranoid and less trusting. Now they're ubiquitous.

Little kid probably got the **** raped out of him by everyone from John Wayne Gacy to Dan Severn in just that one mile alone.

Well, the Internet elsewhere tells me the kid is/was 8, and was dropped off "on the highway." Now, depending on whether "the highway" is a state-maintained surface road, or a divided limited access freeway, I could see somebody thinking that was a bit much.

But, yeah, the "pedos these days" **** is ridiculous.

8? I would totally kick my 8 year old out of the car and make her walk.
HIway on the other hand really depends on what freaking highway we are talking about.

Highway 79 in Temecula no problem

    The I 15 thats a different story.
Given that its in HI and the guy kicked the kid out I hope its more likely to be like the 79.

One would assume that if the highway were a major artery, the judge would have mentioned "ground into jelly by a semi," but then, she's dim enough to think kidnappings by strangers are on the rise, so, you know.

Is there more to this story? It does not make sense. Is this a location where no child should ever be walking due to particularly high crime rates? Did this happen during a time when kids are normally walking home? I sometimes wish judges should be allowed and possibly required to make official statements on odd cases so we don't have to depend on news stories that often leave details out.
