As for self defense, improve what you can which is striking.

All of the advice and pointers are appreciated.
Having started training in the arts relatively late (in my early 40's), I now find myself an older guy in great shape (notwithstanding the gimpy knees), who has to accept limitations. I actually did a little grappling in the mid 2000's at a Royce affiliate school.
It was very frustrating even then, before TKR, as a.) I really enjoyed it, b.) I felt I could become pretty good at it, but c.) the need to be able to walk took precedence over my desire to be well rounded.
    Whew, sorry about the verbosity.
Anyway, what I will take: Train easy on sprawl and escapes; keep improving standup, and TRY NOT TO GET IN ANY F------ FIGHTS.
    You guys are the best.
    Thanks

Yep, sadly it usually never pans out in my area. the closest I've been able to attend was one in Gainesville.

Wait what? What state would your knees have to be in to make getting into a street fight a good idea?

Good knees don't justify getting in a street fight! The only good reason to put yourself in a situation where street fighting is likely is public safety: law enforcement, security, etc. Even in those professions it is ideal to avoid street fighting. In any case, I don't think these professions are a good idea with bad knees.
