I would be more than happy to work with Blackmonk, if you are in the neighborhood we have a open door policy at Budokan or I can come to your club. I have taught a classic uchimata in 1/2 hour to 6 month judokas, the two main points are upper body contact and leaving the attacking leg behind.
Judoka_UK I was fortunate to spend 10 summers "One week each" with Neil Adams I was just over 40 when it started and already had a uchimata and taiotoshi, but I learned a better way to teach them. One of many things I learned from Neil besides newaza was that it is best to learn the basics of the throw before you work on the modifications/hybrids, not sure why it took so long to learn that?

Thanks to both for the compliments.

I live in Austin, TX. I think that might be pretty far away.

Yea, I saw Austin Texas in your profile, thought Ben knew something I didn't. You know he does have to drive three hours to find a shopping mall.

I'll be working on it some more the rest of the week. And then after school is out, I'll be practicing multiple times a day for a couple of months, so I'll have plenty of time to fool around with it.

For some reason I thought you were in Seattle area, my mistake. I'm sure Bert would love a trip to Austin, though, LOL !

I figured it out, I associated Blackmonk with Aaron Fields.

Anyway, was working with one of my former students who is into ammy MMA now (4-1). He wanted help with all things, his Uchi Mata. Keeping in mind out discussion, and using his taller and younger brother for uke, we got it working pretty well. He was having the same issues as Blackmonk, more or less.

Another thing was he was doing was dropping his head/bending chest to do the throw instead of keeping his head up and his chest open. That's a common flaw on most Judo throws, in general.

Something else that came up was how to move your hips. The tendency is for people to move their feet, then their hips, then their upper body. As near as possible, your whole body needs to move into position for the throw as quickly as possible. There are of course subtle variations of that depending on context, but in general it's essential. The "snap" of the hips coordinated with the rest of the movement is critical. The tendency is for example, to get the chest contact but leave the hips behind, or move the feet then the hips.

So many judoka try to bend at the waist almost like a bad ogoshi. If you can leave the attacking leg behind " how many times have I said that" and contact from the hip to arm pit at the same time pulling uke to you you are there done deal don't worry about anything else it is all natural from there.

Here is a Inoue uchimata video notice how the attacking leg is the last to touch uke very simple and basic. There is also a Swain video that is also very basic but solid I will try to find .
