Hawai'i Lifeguards physical performance minimums (doesn't include open water lifesaving and other skills tests):
1. 1000 x 1000 Yards Run/Swim -- Under 25 Minutes
2. 500 Yard Swim -- Under 10 Minutes
3. 400 Yard Rescue Board Paddle (4 turns) -Under 4 Minutes
4. 100 x 100 x 100 Run/Swim/Run -- Under 3 Minutes
Much of what it takes to work in the surf here is obviously far beyond the scope of the above.

USCG Rescue Swimmer recommendations to start training.
USCG Rescue Swimmer recommend scores to better succeed with the training course:
- Pushups - 100+ in 2:00
- Sit-ups - 100+ in 2:00
- Pull-ups - 15-20+
- 12:00 Swim - swim 500-750yd
- 1.5 mile run - sub 9:00
- 25 yd underwater swim - complete
- 200 yd Buddy tow - complete
3/05/2014 5:09pm, #13The same goes for, say, Ken Shamrock's Lion's Den test. If you look at that and say, "wow, someone who can do that is a badass!" and then replicate the *test* as your *training*, then you've gone terribly wrong. The training should not be the test. The training should not be specific to the test. The training should make you good at all things, or all the things that matter, which will include the test. If you just do the Lion's Den workout five times a week, then congratulations you're good at that workout but you missed out on maximally improving the attributes that the test is intended to measure. A rational strength and conditioning program would achieve better results than aping the test itself.

Aw, hell, I can't keep myself away from this thread.
Here's my list of minimums. If I can't do any of these then I feel weak, slow, and fat. When I can do most or all of them then I feel...not strong, but at least not weak. They only really apply to me, because other people are different. But maybe it will help. I certainly think they're a reasonable starting point for combat athletes.
- Bodyweight barbell squat for reps
- Deadlift 1.5xBW
- 12 pull-ups
- 15 dips
- Bodyweight power clean
- 7:00 mile
These apply whether or not I'm doing combat sports at the time, which I can't say for the higher standards I have for myself (e.g. for "strong" or "in shape"). These minimums certainly aren't much! That's not the point. They're just the floor I try to maintain at all times. Recently I regained all of them (well...technically not the deadlift, but this week I repped out (BW*1.4) like 'tweren't no thing so I think a BW*1.5 single would be doable today) after losing the squat and deadlift for too many months.

There's a fertility god in egyptian mythology whose name I don't remember, but how he came to godhood is quite the story.
It was a time of war, and all able-bodied men were drafted to fight far from their homes. Our protagonist was of age, but he only had one good leg, so he was a no-no for the army. He was the only young man who stayed in the village.
Fastforward several years, and the men return home from the war. They discover they all suddenly have new kids of varying and suspicious ages. They track the seed of the problem to our lame hero, and decide to lynch him. Because of his physical difficulties, the soon-to-be god can't scape the men, and when they are about to kill him, the wives throw themselves in front of the swords and knives to plead safety for our active hero, since they consider that to have satisfied the womanly needs of an entire village for so many years requires the strength of a god.
And so he was named a god of fertility (I think his name was Mhen or something like that). There goes the virility challenge: impregnate an entire village of women and survive their angry husbands.
I'm sure Don Fry approves.
