My stepsis lives in the LA area, but I usually head up the coast to San Francisco to visit friends every year.
They're a bunch of party animals so I end up staying with my friend's Aunt in Oakland :)
Jack London Square is great, like everyone's been saying.
If it's raining & you like space nerdy things like me.. Chabot Space Center has a big refracting telescope & space flight simulation.
You can also take the ferry over to San Francisco, which is nice & gives you something to do for the day.. just take the trollies whereva you wanna go.
Golden Gate Park is REALLY nice if you're looking for something to do outside , but they also have a museum & aquarium too if you need to get into some AC.

You could always BART on up to Berkeley, shop, get some Indian, and hang out on the campus, down by the river where the Eucalyptus grove is. It's purty up there.
Be aware, however, that it exists in its own strange reality-warping field. Kind of thing that makes taking acid on a weekday seem like a good idea...I would liken it to the boxing or the muay thai of internal kung fu, even though that's like calling apples the oranges of the apple world. --WalkOn
