    SAMBO: Scarf Hold Options

New video from Aaron Fields and Sea-Town SAMBO.

This video covers some basic principles behind using the scarf hold and also a nice choke to take from their.

    Questions always welcome.

Hey hope everyone is enjoying these vids from Sea-Town SAMBO. All these vids just show things we are working on at the moment as part of class, no special magic involved.

Here is a quick on that does along with the one above so rather than create a new post for it I'll put it here...

Are you putting your weight on their floating ribs or their abs?

    Ah. O.k. Thanks.

We were going over escapes from scarf on thursday in BJJ, so I tried to suck him towards me more. It felt a lot snugger and like I had more weight on him than usual.

The entangled arm video was great.

    Good videos.

How are you able to keep them from just rolling to their back on that choke? Is you knee blocking on that far side? Do you switch to a punch grip putting your knuckles into the mat then slide your forearm under the head and go back to the other side if they do get their back flat on the mat?

With scarf, bringing your opponent closer to you will usually get you reversed. I always say to leave at least a hand-width between your hip and your opponent's ribcage.

Mr. HB -- Yeah basically what blackmonk said, you want to be a little away from your opponent and leaning into them a bit. If you are too close your weight will be on top of them and the rib cage will hold the weight better, also the chance of being rolled increases. Pressure should be on the lower ribs coming in slightly from the side, from their pull their shoulders back in toward you (hugging them) will apply the rest of the pressure... and then relax and let them suffer ;)

Zap -- Aaron's base once he has them rolled up crushes and keeps them their. You can see it in the video he rolls them just pass the point where they are headed to a belly down and then he keeps his under hook on the arm and then bases on them; from their they can't go forward and they can't go back. Pretty helpless from that point, which I can testify from feeling it first hand.

However for us mortals with less control I do what you are basically saying, I drop my knee. I find that dropping my right knee (being in the same position as Aaron in the vid) into the upper part of the shoulder blades allows me to pin them well enough that I can then drop my elbow to finish the choke. You should never have to switch hands / grips. Play around with it, if you still have questions I'll bug Aaron about coming in here and giving you a better answer / break down.

    Thanks.
