Tons of "Grandmasters" at tournaments!?
So, I have been wondering what the hell is going on. I have seen Numerous 8th,9th, and 10th Dan ranks at karate tournaments. Do they just give themselves these ranks when they create a slightly varied style? Or is there just some all-powerful man handing out Grandmaster titles like candy?
In fact, I saw two 9th and a 10th Dan award someone from a completely different style his 8th Dan rank even though he wasn't from the same style. Is this right? How can you claim to be legitimate when someone from a different style gives you rank?
I've been introduced by at least ten people who were "grandmasters" in weird styles I haven't heard of. What qualifies them for that? Just because they "create a style?" OMG, it is so frustrating. Why does this crap happen?
