    Hell yeah! Hell no!

John Hackleman thinks your martial art sucks

Head coach of the Pit MMA gym, run by Hawaiian Kempo Grandmaster John Hackleman, gives his thoughts on the meaning behind traditional and functional martial arts, as well as why schools teaching fake martial arts are doing their students a grave disservice.

Also, because every time we mention Mr. Hackleman we are obligated by law to mention he trained Chuck Liddell :P

I liked it but there was no need for him to rant against the Five Animal systems specifically. Maybe it's a matter of meeting too many "dancy" kung fu schools.

This guy doesn't really talk like he understands the (very simple) philosophy with the animals/elements system of categorization.. Like a lot of people with bad experiences in the CMA world, he's confusing the names of the systems with the reasons for the names. That's unfortunate.

The Chinese love to name and categorize things. They could easily have been called Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Orange styles. Animals made it more interesting.

    The names don't matter.

    Otherwise, spot on.

    I always enjoy Ke?po's findings.

This guy is just busy mouth boxing. In those 10 minutes he could've trained and developed his skill, or met with other instructors to learn their ways, or any number of other things, but instead he decided it was worth his time to blab at his webcam for all the internet to see. Whether he teaches quality fighting or not, who cares? He's probably going to instill a bullying attitude into all his students who have an urge to run their mouth like he does as well.

Joe Lewis also reeled at animal kung fu in this article a while back (http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=96583).

They both appear to distinguish between "human" and "animal" movements, but I still don't buy that this is such an important distinction to be made. If Hackleman has a scientific background maybe there's something to it, but otherwise this seems a little presumptuous. Even Judo, surely the premier 20th century effort at making martial arts "scientific", really only altered pedagogy and introduced a specific conditioning regimen; the techniques, what with their origins in bending willow trees and generous Tengu, didn't change that much.

The 5 animal jab that he was getting at I think was directed more the Kenpo schools that he is loosely associated with due to similar Kajukenbo lineage (many Kenpo people point to Chuck Liddell as legitimacy for their training) as well as the number of schools who look to Mr. Hackleman as an example of both sportive and traditional instruction. But yeah, he pissed people off with that. But if you're teaching beak hands, leopard paws, and snake strikes....well the shoe fits and you mighta as well lace that bitch up and wear it.

He does a vlog/blog just like many other instructors. This is a topic that is important to him, as many martial arts schools are anything but martial, and hearing it from a 10th degree black belt, who puts out numerous top level MMA fighters is about as much of an authority figure on the topic as we can find. We have countless color belts on this site "mouth boxing" daily about martial arts, and if they can make a difference, I see no reason why coach Hackleman can't.
