Here's my issue with Van Donk and Hatsumi and all the other modern Ninjer Masters. It's one thing to teach/practice an antique art in order to preserve it. It's another to teach/practice it with the belief that is still 100% applicable to the modern day.
They purport to teach antique arts related to Samurai traditions that had military significance. I can't think of another art that remotely claims an experienced practitioner will make an operational field asset. That is what I think drives many people to join Booj...they want more than a martial art, they want to feel like they're being trained to be like Samurai...war machines. This is just like the Shaolin Koolaid...some people can't just learn the quan or weapons or fighting philosophy...they need to believe they are killer monks, ready to fight pirates at a moment's notice to defend the Empire.
That is why Booj training is so often laughable. 2014 has no need for Samurai, and if it did, everyone knows they'd train far better than the Booj has ever offered.
Can you imagine modern Booj fighting Samurai? Laugh with me.
Booj training, if it were just limited to taijutsu, would not be nearly as bad as it is with all the other stuff they seem to throw in. Ancient ninja were masters of horse, archery, weapons, diversionary tactics, explosives...their best weapon was not their hand to hand skills, but their arson.
