I've emailed a high ranking Brazilian BB who reports being coerced and extorted by those above him in the BJJ hierarchy. This includes being forced to surrender earnings under threat of rank revocation and deportation. If this is what really happened, it confirms the reports of what is essentially human trafficking inside the BJJ community.

Edit to above: It is not clear yet if this involves any of the individuals under discussion here (ie:IBJJF or GB leadership), only that it involves "a Gracie family member". If it's not Carlos, Jr it may be outside the scope of this inquiry... we'll see what comes of it.

This is what makes this whole scenario interesting; This scheme is predicated on the concept of separating actions to make them appear innocuous.

    1. The black belt is linked to the Visa.

    Not a problem.

    2. The black belt is expensive and can be revoked if payments aren't current.

Again, not a problem. You don't have to like it, but nothing sinister there.

Either of those two facts can be justified or dismissed as a minor annoyance. Cost of doing business or what have you. However, when you put them together, you get a visa that is expensive and can be revoked if payments to a third party aren't current.

In the initial investigation, we see an individual in said predicament reporting to a third party in New York, allegedly associated with the IBJJF, and then demanding large sums of money on their behalf, acting as a messenger of sorts.

Two witnesses came forward to offer up information.

Witness A described writing a letter for immigration purposes based on rank and lineage.

Witness B described an encounter in which the individual claimed that he participated solely due to the threat of rank loss.

Lending credence to the claim that this individual wasn't acting freely, upon failure to collect the funds, he was promptly recalled by Brazilian Top Team (BTT), and forced to change locations.

When we followed up, we found law firms that specialized in such activities (linking the belt and visa) and reports of several other victims of this scam. Links and screen shots will be provided tomorrow.

Now, with instances popping up inside AND outside of the IBJJF, the question is raised as to how widespread human trafficking is in the world of Brazilian Jiujitsu.

This law firm also provides such services:

Here's a guy by the name of Cassio, buying a certificate from the IBJJF for his work visa. In addition to buying your black belt for immigration purposes, you can choose to purchase additional degrees. When he refused to purchase the additional degrees, his students were penalized.

Note that the stories contained in this link all predate the bullshido investigation by three years:

Not to beat a dead horse but it still amazes me that someone like Cassio Werneck, who is a multiple time World and Pan Am champion IN THE FEDERATION'S OWN CHAMPIONSHIPS, is not recognized. If there was any sense to this system, they would automatically register people who were validated at the highest level in their own tournaments. This just underscores that this is all about $$$ and not keeping a clean house.

Because, really for so long, there was no real reason to pay, he didn't pay membership dues. All those years don't count, and so by Federation standards Cassio is a Black belt with no stripes. He can not sign on my paperwork.

Dear Members of the Board of Governors, It has been brought to my attention that one of our members may have fraudulently obtained rank and certifications from our association. Please see below.

Hanshi Treem, as per our constitution you are hereby charged to initiate investigation into these allegations. If, in your opinion after careful scrutiny of the available facts, there exists basis for these allegations, you are charged with initiating a full investigation, including contacting Mr. Morton who may provide evidence on his behalf. If these allegations prove to be true, you are required to bring the matter before the Board of Governors for review. The consequences could be the removal of Mr. Morton of the rolls of USMAA membership, stripping of any rank obtained through the association as well as rescinding all certifications authorized by the association.

I would ask the people following this thread to note these features of a normal MA governing body:

    (1) A board of governors/directors.

    (2) A constitution governing the rights and responsibilities of the group's members and leadership.

    (3) Detailed procedures for investigating allegations of wrong-doing .

    (4) Named president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and all members of the board of directors (and individual contact information for each, see: http://www.wwmaa.org/new-org/new-pdf...s.pdf#zoom=100).

    (5) Publicly listed physical address and central office phone number.

Bear in mind that this is from an organization founded by a man with a less than perfect record on rank-selling ethics (Phil Porter), and still manages to do what the IBJJF has never done: organize itself in a transparent and professional manner in accord with the accepted standards for any serious enterprise. Of course there are organizations are not transparently organized, and they tend not to be taken seriously as a result because of the potential for invisible mismanagement, fraud, etc.
