I believe that you are correct, and that Tuhon Buck taught it. Of course, with his background in Mande Muda Silat, he would be well versed in its use.

I repeat, more chance of damage to the bearer than the intended victim.

I think it is funny when you see people spinning it around their index finger as if their opponent won't have the inspired idea of grabbing it, twisting, and ending the attack right there..............or worse.

Well, nothing says you have to circle it around your hand just because you can. If you don't, I don't see it being more dangerous to the user than any other knife.

Yes, nothing says you have to, but if you see all the major practitioners doing it there is a sense of obligation to do it "right".

Yep, or it getting caught on a fold of clothing, etc.

I guess flipping balisongs around is passe.

Yeah, good point. As far as i know(about1.5 inches) the hoop is not there so you can spin it around you index finger(real invitation to a broken digit) it's to prevent it getting knocked out of your hand.
Oh, as for the numbnut, i'm sorry, nunchuck remark, i've always thought it would be a fun idea to walk around with one, then when you get into a fight, whip it out and hand it to the other guy. Just stand back and enjoy. LOL!
