Early Champion Ali vs Late Champion Ali, surely???

That apart, your point is fully understood. He'd lost his incredible speed of foot and the turning of his chin to avoid punches at the last second. When he returned, he'd compensated by developing into a Ring General. Marvellous Athlete. Genius, of course.

    This is old, old, old..
Gary Goodard..who wore a Kuk Sool Won gi into the cage in his debut even though he had never trained in the art, apparently.

Forgive me, but isn't that Gary Goodrich who famously claimed arm wrestling as his base martial art in Pride and also competed in K1? Could have been a mis- ememberance of his last name, of course.

His name was Gary Goodridge. He was, in fact, a world-class arm wrestler but did lie about having a Kuk Sool Won background. He was granted an honorary Kuk Sool Won black belt after beating up a Kuk Sool Won student in a dojo fight, and subsequently represented that Kuk Sool Won school in the UFC. His actual background (Besides arm-wrestling) was boxing.

He was very effective at creating a persona for himself and building a fan base, emulating Tank Abbott's "bad boy" image to make him more marketable. He was able to use his brute power to defeat some of the smaller fighters at the time like Paul Herrera and Jerry Bohlander, but his limited skills became a liability when he squared off against guys like Mark Schultz and Mark Coleman. As his career progressed, however, he developed skills in striking and grappling. He had a nice, long career that saw him fighting for virtually every major promotion around while he was active: UFC, PRIDE, K-1, DEEP, Affliction, and various Brazilian Vale tudo promotions in between.

Nowadays he suffers from traumatic brain injury, having been knocked out/TKO'ed thirty-five times in kickboxing and MMA. Let's remember the good times:

By the way, the Canadian news bit about UFC 9 was something I uploaded. I did some things for a guy, and now I have a lot of rare MMA footage I intend to upload (I know I promised to upload "Secrets of the Octagon" a while back, but I couldn't figure out how to shove the VHS into my floppy drive. Too bad, the tapes are hilarious).

I'm talking things like Jason DeLucia vs. Trent Jenkins, Tim Sylvia representing MMA poorly on the Tom Greene show, grainy home footage of Royce Gracie making out with his wife... Everything.

This fight just about sums up PRIDE in the early 2000's.
