How many kids actively listen to their corner while competing? I know its hard enough for adults to manage.

Overcoaching at tournaments is something that really gets on my nerves. I may start a separate thread on the subject.

In short, I think coaching during a competition is more distracting to my son than it is helpful. I think he performs better when he just goes out and does his thing without any outside interference.

No, bitch. That's not how it's done. At all.
    That was awful !

    OT, but question?

Those kids don't actually apply submissions to finish, correct?

I've had to throw coaches and parents out of my tournaments before. I just stop doing them back in 2008 on such a large scale because of it.

It is possible, but as with adults requires specific training. Cues need to be consistent from training to competition.

With kids, it's not (or shouldn't be ) really necessary unless they are competing at higher levels. In Judo, that would be national or at least qualifying for national level competitions (for me at least). Otherwise, it's just encouragement and positive feedback is best.

Yes, they do. The ref can stop it if he thinks a kid is in danger at any time.

If a kid is properly prepared/trained, then he/she shouldn't need much if any coaching from the sidelines. That's my experience at least. And if he/she is not properly prepared/trained, then coaching from sideline won't do much if any good. I've been down that road and it's best to just be positive and encouraging if the latter.

I should have elaborated and said for fighting and poor sportsmanship.
