'White Belt BJJ- Your First Priority' - A Primer

This introductory article has to be one of the best written, funniest bits I've seen in a long time.

    http://www.charliefromtheplaza.com/n...first-priority

The belt that most guys quit at is white belt, and the reason is frustration. This frustration comes from:

    • Getting tapped out.
    • Getting tapped out again. And again.
    • Getting tapped out by smaller guys.
    • Getting tapped out by nerds.
    • Not knowing what these nerds are doing to you.
    • These nerds shouldn't be able to tie you up like this. It's not fair.
    • If your girlfriend saw this nerd make you surrender, she'd leave you.
    • For that nerd.

"Charlie from the Plaza" AKA Charlie, student of Marcio "Macarrao" Stambowsky (who teaches at the Gracie Sports Academy in Norwalk Connecticut), has apparently written some really great introductory articles for everyone's inner white belt.

"In my classes, I like to teach "white belt jiu-jitsu" - the stuff everyone has to know and that everyone can do".
His overall blog is great...worth your time.

I can tell you what a white belt's first priority is without all that annoying humor, or rather a white belt's first set of priorities.

    1. Come to class to learn, not to "win" at sparring.

    2. Wash your gi every time.

    3. Trim your finger and toenails.

    4. I said, "Come to class to learn, not to 'win' you jackass."

    5. Don't hold your breath while sparring.

    6. A breath mint or some gum before class is a nice gesture. It says "I care".

I've always been partial to Stephan Kesting's BJJ Roadmap (PDF), but this is nice.

Honestly what I really want is a poster for the gym wall that shows the positional hierarchy, in descending order of dominance, like a visual version of page 5 of that PDF. Everything else is just jnp's list and making sure they know the rules for sparring. Less reading, more doing.

I will go with pay attention in class, not to youtube. In rounds, try to execute the techniques you are learning in class. Be enjoyable to roll with, this means be in control, and don't worry much about winning. Class is for training, competition is for winning.

Emily K made some neat mind maps/flow charts as reference material for her DVDs with Stephan Kesting.

Probably not exactly what you want, but they make for pretty cool posters.

Deodorant is nice, too. Your boyfriend may like your manly odeur, and I may be able to tolerate it from long experience, however, I prefer not to do so.

Goes along with the clean uniform concept...

When you are a raw beginner, don't try to teach other beginners. Especially if you "learned" the technique from Youtube. Just ask your coach for help, and suggest that your clubmates do the same.
