In theory I could support these but really what we need to take a strong look at is how we let parties rule the roost. Parties are not government organisations. They shouldn't wield so much power. They serve their own good and not even necessarily their own platform. The parties tend to control the purse strings for election/re-election. If we could limit the amount of money they can spend I think we could reduce the amount of power they have.

Its the senate that has been voting no on the house budget so what does that tell you about the make up of the house? Not as much of the minority as you would like to believe.

Its exactly what this is, more childish behavior from one side about one stupid issue. This is their last resort, after this, it goes into effect and they are afraid its going to be successful than there whole time in congress pissing and moaning about this one issue is going to get them all(some) kicked out.

Yes it can because that is how our system works.

But this isn't how our system works. Government shutdowns are damn rare and typically a sign that somebody fucked up (keeping things running is kind of their job), refusing to raise the debt ceiling was just about unheard of, they set the sequester as something so outrageous no sane congress would allow it to happen (guess what), defaulting on our obligations just does NOT happen...all of these tactics are definitely NOT business as usual, they all do damage (look up what the cost is projected to be to our economy...only a few weeks to pass Katrina and Sandy...combined!)...all of this is pretty much the definition of our system not working...

Politics are dynamic and while shutdowns are rare they are not unheard of 18 in total now I believe. We are still a young country new things will be tried. One could certainly argue our current level of debt is an indication things have not been working properly period, so maybe a new approach is needed? Maybe shutting **** down and stop spending and across the board cuts are a good idea in the long run?
Of course not paying our current debts would be bad but we are not talking about that quite yet.

By this definition nothing is off limits, no matter how radical...heck why not give it a try? As I said earlier in this thread, nobody wins from this kind of posturing...the ones doing it are primarily the freshman ideologues who don't really have a clue...they're flying high on emotion.

There is no discussion, no real debate...the more radicalized congress gets the less it accomplishes...to some folks this is a good thing...chuck the whole thing! Voting these types into office is like making a militant atheist pope...they only want to destroy the institution they've been entrusted with running.

No good comes from this...all that remains to be seen is how much bad...

So those who think the goverment should be greatly shrunk shouldn't be represented?
They are obviously no longer some tiny minority.

What is the real argument against limiting campaign spending? Seems to me you guys waste incredible amounts of money not to mention your politicians' time. 2 year election campaigns with billion dollar budgets seem the eensiest bit excessive to this commie pinko ******.

They are grossly over represented at the moment it seems, and a small number of people can do a lot of damage if they set their minds to it...

I wouldn't say that they shouldn't have a voice, but if they are there solely to disrupt the process then they really aren't doing the job they agreed to do. Ideology aside, they are sworn into office under oath, and right now they are refusing to do their jobs unless they get what they want. They accepted a responsibility which they are now failing.

I just can't get behind that.
