I think the answer is obvious now. It's obvious that it would be a bad thing for everybody if minorities forcing their will on the majority by refusing to allow the government to pay its bills were to become a regular way of doing legislative business.

The Republicans, if they could possibly get a more damaged reputation internationally.

I know. When I say "pay its bills", I don't just mean the government's debts; I mean the things the government has to pay money to do every day.

So one side stiking up for its views on the budget in a budget debate is now unconcinable? Would you have this outrage if it where your side?

First of all, this is not "one side sticking up for its views on the budget in a budget debate". This is a part of one side trying to to write its views on one particular issue into law by making it a contingency of the entire budget and refusing to allow the budget debate to continue until they get their way. They "stuck up for their views" about the ACA when it went through Congress according to the established legislative process; this is something else entirely.

Second, yes, I would have a problem with Democrats doing the same thing. When governor Walker pushed his anti-union bill through the legislature here in Wisconsin, Democrats tried to stop it by up and leaving so that the legislature couldn't have quorum. It's the same idea: if the legislative process doesn't go the way you want it to, try and force your will on the majority by going outside the legislative process. It's bullshit. It's a declaration that the legislative process is only valid when it gives one particular group what they want.

Well, I sure as hell would...if they can pass legislation, pass it, if they can challenge it in the courts, challenge it...this is something different...if the anti-war group managed to block military funding until they had unconditional withdrawal of US forces from Middle East they would be treated like terrorists...same thing if some cadre deliberately threw a wrench into the whole country to get their way on abortions, guns, or whatever. Pick your poison, it doesn't matter...what matters is a vocal minority whose job it is to run a branch of our government are using the threat (or in this case the actuality) of not doing their jobs to get what they want, and they don't care who gets hurt in the process.

Why this isn't outraging more people is the mystery to me.
