Yes, I heard about that. That was before I had started training, and I felt like it wouldn't be appropriate for me to show up knowing nothing about combat sports.

I had contacted him since I live in the area and asked him if they taught SAMBO there, and he told me that what they taught there was what he called "Freestyle Jiu Jitsu", and it mixed together jiu jitsu, wrestling, and judo.

The outside of the building says "L.A. Budo and Yoga", however my mom went in there one day and asked when the yoga classes were and he said that they didn't teach yoga, it just came with the sign. She said it was messy in there as well, so all in all I was kind of put off by the place.

I should have gone in to check it out myself, but I had already found the place I train at now by that time.

I have contacted SAMBOSteve about what, if anything, can be done to try and bring SAMBO to the South Bay are of SoCal. I'm not too optimistic that anything can be done, but I think that a SAMBO gym would do well in the area, and so I'd like to get the idea out there that there is interest out here for SAMBO.

We have a lot of BJJ here, and I think people would be willing to try something new and different. People here are also very physical and active.

Are you talking about South Bay, LA or South Bay, San Diego?

    Sorry for the confusion, Omega

I was talking about South Bay L.A.

Hermosa, Redondo, Manhattan, Hawthorne, Torrance, El Segundo, mostly.

Interested at all in helping out trying to get SAMBO going on down here? (Or both places, for that matter. Both of the South Bays could be a foothold for SAMBO in the west)

I think it would be good for wrestlers leaving high school, as opposed to going straight to BJJ, they could go to something that works with a wrestlers strengths. My coach is working on organizing a Catch tournament in L.A. too (But as of yet, to no avail) Which also works with a wrestlers strengths.

The ASA has a Facebook group, he checks pretty regularly.

Edit: But honestly, about the only way to bring SAMBO to your area is to train in it and then open a gym. If you could gather a local interest, maybe bring in a SAMBO instructor to do some seminars. Brief exposure is surely better than none.

Talk to Beach Cities Martial Arts. If they're interested I'll help.
