Learns me right for paying attention to the early reports.

Looks like Alexis didn't get the OTH as was previously suggested, but instead an Honorable:

Also, he may have had just a shotgun when he entered the building, acquiring other weapon(s) as he progressed:

I'd heard an initial report that he'd lost his job, but not sure if they ever backed that up.

Friends and family keep describing him as friendly and "gentle", which is a little odd for a guy with a documented history of incidents involving rage and firearms...

I heard a snippet of interview with one of his neighbors? I think it was, who indicated that Alexis wasn't paid for some recent work, and that was a source of consternation - don't know if that's what made him snap, but sounds plausible.

    Found this article

Honestly sounds like he had a bit of mental illness.
So are we as a nation going to talk about our need to deal with mental issues or are we going to focus on guns yet again?

A few days ago I saw a car with 2 bumper stickers. One was a "you can take my gun from my cold dead hands", and the other said "my only memories are flashbacks".

This is a pretty tricky issue. There's quite a bit of law on the books to ensure patient privacy for those being treated for mental illness. I'm not sure how even a good background check would have been able to ID him as mentally ill (though his previous legal issues might have raised a red flag). Clearly he passed whatever screening process they used for civilian contractors on base...

(Full disclosure, I'm a psychologist, and we've been receiving regular reminders of how NOT to violate these laws at my place of employment).

When you go for a clearence your suppose to disclose certain things such as mental illnesses. I am famaliar with HIPPA myself but I wouldn't be surprised if he signed away some of his rights to get said clearance.
