If you dig the fingertips in front of the heel of the palm, the knuckles should land first.

If not, then nvm and what the other guys are saying about aligning the wrists is it.
As you deduced this is how I form my fist

And I should form it like this?

I thought it would be interesting to see how much can be determined from the damage alone

For instance the distal side of the knuckle has larger abrassions. Does this mean that that part of the knucle landed first?

Precisely. OP, f you're looking to have a wrist-crank injury or two, you're on the right track.

In general, I feel that scraping the knuckles to the point of bleeding/scabbing is indicative of excessive followthrough of punches that aren't hitting center mass and are therefore grazing the surface. I suspect this because bloody knuckles are more common among beginners (who then post them online to show that they're hardcore) and because you can hit a bag with hard, correct punches and not scrape your knuckles open. When you hit properly, the energy is dumped into the bag with little side-to-side (in respect to the front of the fist) displacement of the fist or bag that would lead to scraping injuries.

The fact that they're on your distal phalanges makes me wonder though, because scraping the bag with those knuckles seems extra awkward. But when you kink your wrist back so those ones lead, the striking surface is actually angled back instead of flat, allowing for more of a grazing/scraping motion even in a straight punch. So, I'm back to suspecting that you're angling your wrist back.

TL;DR: you're punching like the Smackdown fist

No, you look OK to me. I was thinking you might have your fingers balled up too tightly, such that your thumb was further inside your palm, pushing the second knuckles out.

I think Perma's on the right track.

It looks to me like you're making contact with the wrong part of your fist.

Try this, trick a couple of the TMA guys I know use to teach noobs, good way to see if your fist is "straight" (I may be explaining these completely wrong):

    1) Make a fist and extend your arm, as if you've just finished your punch, put a ruler from your knuckles and up your arm, if its not straight you're not doing it right.

    2) Put your fist against a wall, so that your "top" knuckles are resting flat against the wall, extend your arm, that's the correct hand position.

Knuckle pushups might help in terms of using the first knuckle of the fingers. You definitely won't be pressing your body off the floor on the second knuckles for very long.
