One thing I'll point out is that Josh was fairly static in his gripping, for example, the cut and grip he showed. That is mostly to isolate what he is doing for demo purposes (correct me if I'm wrong, Josh). In judo at least, with all grip fighting, it helps to move integrate the gripping with moving to keep uke from having a chance to react to your grip attack and cut/regrip. Of course, in general grappling the same would be true.

This would fall into what I call a dynamic gripping situation. You will not have a lot of time to hang out in that grip just because the opponent will be fighting to get out of it so you will need to be attacking ASAP. At 1:30ish on the back grip video is a good example.
