I'm assuming you mean that you're supposed to do this if it's feasible, as opposed to an immediate-emergency situation, right?

Of course. Its not "if you are getting punched... or stabbed... run away and call the cops". But we aren't supposed to step into the middle of a violent or confrontational incident. As long as there aren't weapons involved, we tend to do so anyway.

My security guard training was mostly explanation of all the ways litigation could be used against you if you try to pull a Die Hard. Observe and report, that's the job.

Them - "So what kind do you do?"
    Me - Shorin Ryu
Them (with puzzled look) - "Huh? I've never heard of that one? Is it like Tae Kwon Do? Because my friend did Tae Kwon Do for like five years. He got as high as you can go. How long have you been doing it?"
    Me - About 27 years
Them - "Oh, so you must be a black belt, right?"

Another favorite is "Wow, really? I never would have known - you don't look like a black belt"

From a ditzy barbie that worked in our office about 5 years ago when she overheard I did martial arts:

"Oh I don't need to learn to fight. My family's rich so if someone attacks me I'll just take them to an ATM and tell them I can give them money."

That is because the people who often run institutions like this are, to put it bluntly, totally fucking stupid people. Their corporate mindset is about what makes money and what loses money. Bad press loses money and lawsuits lose money. It does not dawn on their fucking radar that yes, people DO come and kill people. I work at an unnamed career college and this guy, who was seriously insane and documentedly so, threatened to kill another student (at a criminal justice field trip because, of course, he was a CJ student). My CJ instructors, all former police, called the guy a "credible threat". I brought it to the admin, who attempted to kill it, told me, "well you can call if you want but they won't do anything". I spent the entire day trying to press the issue and get them to agree to allow me to call the cops. These people DON'T get it, and are not going to get it until they themselves end up getting gunned down. Yeah, you hit a fucking nerve.

    2) That it does work"

That's why I let people use whatever noun they want. "You still doing that karate?" "Yep, still doing it."

First question is almost always are you a black belt, and for years I had to explain how I didn't have an actual black belt but that I held dan, but then you can't compare dan between styles blah blah blah, eyes glazing over.

Now I have an actual black belt, so I can just say "yes". Much simpler.
