He did have some...interesting recurrent obsessions, for sure. Kinda stick out like a sore thumb, eh? Fascist? Everybody is a fascist these days.

Oh and I wasnt talking about "progressive" in the US politics sense.

But to not blow up the thread, not mine but nice:

It's all good. I'll try not to take you so literally in the future, being as you obviously have a fine, subtle, and highly developed sense of humor.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is the best example. The heroes are right because they're powerful, profoundly contemptuous of democracy and cult-of-personality hero-worship is the only workable form of government.

It's been a while since I read The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress, several years, so I can't really comment. I don't even have a copy anymore.

I will say this, though, if someone writes a story in which the heroes are "fascists" (and I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you about Heinlein), does that make the author a fascist ? Anyway, derail, LOL.

Sexually confused? No, he pushed the boundaries of social morality of his day; that's all he was doing, looking to piss people off. Think of him as a trolling genius that used Science Fiction as his medium instead of the Internet.

The guy wrote a book, in the 60's, about a white family that got sent into the future where black people ruled the planet and kept whites as foodstock because they'd ruined the world with their cracker bullshit.

Meh, then as now I think "just trolling" is a convenient out when you get called on bullshit

In the general case if they are presented heroically (i.e. the plot shows them to have been right all along, the universe bends to accommodate them and no counterpoint is introduced to the correctness of their actions) then mostly, or at least someone doing an impression of one. A book where the protagonists are fascists, not nearly so much...

True that his anti-racism was iconoclastic and quite ahead of its time, especially in the American SF of the era which tended to be pretty reactionary.

Farnham's Freehold, I've still got that one in paperback from the 70s. Definitely pushed the limits there...I love how the old man broke the guys neck using a karate blow he learned from a book (self taught expert).
