    Grappler's Defense Against Left Hook

Hey guys, long-time grappler who's been taking my 13-year-old cousin to boxing gyms to help him learn to close the gap against good punchers.

My stand-up knowledge is limited, and my cousin keeps getting rocked with left hooks, very similar to what you see in this video (lead left hook in particular). Any advice on how to defend against that punch from a grappler's perspective?

I'd guess slip the hook and go for arm triangle, take the back, or single leg.

Aside from ducking under it, how do you slip a hook? Isn't a slip a horizontal movement?

Throw punches before you shoot in.

Otherwise you could do those fence style defences that grapplers use for strikers. But I would just box and grapple at the same time. Save you getting your head smashed in a bit.

This relies on the boxer not bothering to move after he hits. Which good boxers have a tendency to do

If this was someone asking how a boxer could deal with grappling they would get torn apart by the peanut gallery here. (Though at least you're going in to face actual boxers, which I guess is better than having one guy pretend to be a boxer, while the other does the stand-up version of crappeling.)

If you want to learn how to deal with hooks, you're going to have to take classes from someone who knows what they're talking about, and put the training in.

From the perspective of most grapplers the answer is 'Get punched in the face, hope it doesn't KO you, execute your takedown.' If a grappler is giving you any other answer then they should probably shut the **** up.

Well, I take that back, another acceptable answer is, 'Shoot a double from half a mile away and hope my opponent trips.'
