    Did I attend a mcdojo?

    http://culturegoldenheart.org/index.html

I think I may have attended a mcdojo, or is truly a real martial arts school dedicated to help students defend themselves. I ask this because, we don't spar, because they dont want us to hurt ourselves. The master says he is always right, the student is always wrong, and have to obey without question. The master has even told me that other styles have stolen techniques from kung fu. That last line is what made me question the legitimacy of my school. What do you guys think?

Clarification: Mcdojo is martial arts sold and marketed as a money making endeavor first and foremost. Bullshido is bullshit martial arts. A mcdojo can teach real martial arts but do so for money, and bullshido can be taught for free.

The website you posted doesn't have much info. The instructor page just says coming soon.

Lots of pictures from "missionary trips" - is this more of a religious organization?

So, do they claim that the martial arts they teach are even FOR self defense, or just Buddhist purposes? Cause if they say they just do them for cultural/spiritual reasons, not fighting, then you can't fault them much.

    Why Teach Martial Arts?

Written on the account of Master Van-Phap:

Being Eastern medicine certified, I understand the internal logic of the human body. Such as, the philosophy of the organs and their channels, the blood vessels and nervous networks, and the acupuncture points along with their energies. Therefore, I use martial-art as a fun and healthy way to physically and philosophically train student of all ages. I teach them to discipline themselves in order to harmonize and balance their body, mind, and energy.
Doesn't sound like self defense is really their thing...

I agree with Perma's definition of Mcdojo. Therefore this:

In 1995, I made the second journey in life to seek freedom. This time, the freedom that I was searching for did not involve any aspects of political, economic, nor social hardships. But what I sought to do was to spiritually liberate myself form the burdens in life. Now, as a Buddhist monk, I discipline myself as I nurture my compassion seed. I believe in the cycle of life, nothing is permanent, thus, everything shares the same nature, as well as the Four Noble Truth (birth, aging, sickness, death) and their connections. So in return for my existence in this life, I wish to contribute my good fortune to those who are not as prosperous as I am. Thus, spawned my mission for the creation of the Culture of Golden Heart Association

I founded the T.C.G.H.A in the summer of 2003. At this point of time, I have 6 volunteers who constantly work with me without any demands, as they share the same dream as I do. Currently, I have about 35 students training under me and my staffs as we teach them to conquer themselves but not others
Would tell me that, by definition, this school is not a Mcdojo.

Now I would ask, what your goals are in learning a martial art. Based on that, you will get a better idea from people if this is the right place for you.
    Combatives training log.

Gezere: paraphrase from Bas Rutten, Never escalate the level of violence in fight you are losing. :D

Pavel Tsatsouline: kettlebell workouts give you “cardio without the dishonour of aerobics”.
