OK I have heard of him. I know about the jackass movies and all. Just haven't been able to watch them.

These empowered women seem to be doing quite well for themselves and that's a good thing. I applaud their efforts. It's my sincere hope that this small beginning spreads through India and other countries. To afford the same basic opportunities to women that exist for men will obviously require a total 180 degree in the mind set for so many cultures/peoples. Sure it will be a long wait but the dialog has started and I'm hopeful.

I'm surprised you're making such a big deal out of girls not shaving their armpits.

I think you might have misunderstood his point AM. Read Megalef's comment in relation to the original post. :)

Those women are doing something really daring considering India has a major rep for oppressing the female half of their population. It's like the laws of the country are stacked against being female. So I say more power to them.

From what I've seen and read, stick fighting is a very old part of Indian martial or self defense tradition. In the eastern part of the country on the border of Nepal, there is an ethnic group called the Tharu and they are famous for stick fighting. If I'm not mistaken, when under colonial British rule the Tharu disguised their martial techniques as dance. Not unlike the way the Philippino people disguised their escrima or arnis stick and weapons systems as dance during colonial Spanish rule.

Whatever the origin of the stick system the women in the article are practicing, I'd think twice before trying to harm or piss off a determined lady with a long, nasty stick. Props to those women.
