You list Canada as your location.

Where did you get the interesting idea that Canadians cannot legally own guns?

I could have a hunting rifle.
    but unless I am a 'vulnerable person' I can't get a handgun.
I'd rather not fumble around with a big rifle in a CQC environment (my house) in a self defense situation.
Even if I did have one, I have to keep it locked up in a safe.

"Noise making trinkets" is slang for land mines.

Since this thread is active again, I'd like to respond to the original question -- what should she have done?

When she heard the back door being kicked in she should have run out the front door, even if she had a gun, since she had no way of knowing if he had one too.

I agree 100% that a firearm is the best home protection, assuming one is comfortable using it, and that a dog is a good second choice.

    Yes, I do have kids.
I saw the full video a few weeks ago, but the thread was old so I didn't respond then. When I posted earlier today, I only read the subsequent posts, and had forgotten that her daughter was in the house. Obviously, my idea that she should have ran out of the front door was way off base. A firearm would have been her only chance, assuming she could have gotten to it.

Honestly, I don't see much that she could have done. People are suggesting firearms... which I don't see how it would have helped here, this was a surprise attack. She wouldn't have had the time to get a gun, aimed the gun and shoot it. I should imagine, if she even owned one, having kids it would have been locked away out of sight and harm. So that's a no go, doubt any martial arts would have helped here, though I've seen people take on far bigger and stronger opponents and win, here it's a clear surprise attack and a brutal one, I honestly doubt she'd have stood a chance and fighting back here may have exacerbated the situation.

As harsh as it sounds, I think she did the right thing, she kept quiet and didn't put up too much resistance thus not giving him the need or an excuse to kill her or the kids. I imagine she'll up the safety of her house now and jump at every shadow but in this situation, there was much she could do.

In my home we've got some firearms, airpistols but they look real enough along with a few swords and my girlfriend knows martial arts and I train with her, though I can't imagine her being that quick as to go up and get any of them and that cautious. It's just one of those things really. It's hard to protect yourself against without going full on paranoid mode.

In the situation she was in, she couldn't have done any better. I've got two kids as well, and I hear loud bangs in my house all of the time. With kids, it's just the norm. If the intruder got in her door in one or two kicks, she would have had absolutely no time to verify the threat and retrieve a weapon. (Or retrieve a weapon and verify the threat, whichever order.)

Obviously a more secure door could have helped. Sure, it's still easy enough for someone to break a window and climb in, but it is a bit slower going. If that was the case, she might have time for weapon retrieval, or a call to 911, or time to escape.

Have a phone handy, firearms, dogs are all useful. A security system with obvious "Smile, you're under video surveillance!" stickers at entry points can also be a nice deterrent.
