Iron Palm: Celebrating One Year of Practice

As of last week, I have been flailing my hands at a canvas bag full of various media for 1 year (with a few week-long hiatuses here and there). Many thanks to Sifu Dugas for starting me on the path. I'm not sure when or if I'll ever test my hands out to see if they are stronger or more durable. Either way I've really found some benefits in the meditative aspects of the practice.

Starting hitting a bag of steel shot today. What has iron palm taught me? Have patience, have a routine, relax, pay attention to what you're doing.

Not sure what's next for me, but I'm thinking of buying a cheap makiwara and using it in place of a heavy bag for the straight punches in Bas Ruttens shadowboxing workout. Gotta get back into some cardio.

Iron palm is great for gardening and landscaping work, too.

No hiatuses allowed until all talk-radio hosts are dead. Get to it.

How do you stand when you practice this?

Just curious, because there are shall we say more challenging ways to practice tit sa jeurng if you are willing to endure the methods.

I stand in a wide horse stance or sit in sieza depending on where my finance is (which dictates which table I use). I'm always up for a challenge.

If you watch Dale's excellent video on iron palm training, you'll note he mentions at one point that he doesn't like to practice iron palm methods in what I would call a sei ping daih ma bo (4 Parallels Great Horse Stance). Also the part where he mentions keeping the dan tien even with the bag.

Those two things are a combination you can dial in, so to speak, to make the exercises more "external": the height of your stance and the height of the bag.

I agree with Dale about not trying fully "parallel" horse stances with iron palm. It makes the training too difficult be to useful for what you are primarily trying to do (strengthen your hands). Just make sure your dan tien is at the bag or below it.
