Unrelated side note: sombo is the worst transliteration of all time.
And not to derail, but yeah... Not the best transliteration. I'm guessing it's a demarcation between the short and long vowel sounds of "a" in English. A more appropriate, but equally bad, transliteration would be "samba", since the vowel reduction in Russian would make the "o" in самбо sound like a schwa.

Thanks guys .
I've emailed asking for the rules . Hopefully it's not sport as I've just read those and if it is it could not be a worse ruleset to match my current skill set unless they included "chubbier guy has to start with his hands behind his back " but regardless ill learn enough from it that the next time ill be prepared.
What does "knot" mean in relation to ankle subs?
Is that no ankle subs at all in sport rules?

It also said no strangle, are side chokes,RNC ok?
Also blackmonk I think this is run by the same guys as the British open or at least members of that association .

In sport sambo, there are no chokes, period. Leglocks, including compression locks, and armlocks are legal. Otherwise, it's throwing and pinning.
A knot usually refers to a leg entanglement position, which is perfectly legal.
Do you have a link to the rules?

Huh, that isn't a sambo ruleset at all, but very similar. Closer to freestyle than anything else.
I'm gonna ask sambosteve about it.

I got bronze, had to fight 6 times.
Everybody was very friendly and welcoming and I met some very good grapplers.
Really enjoyed it but it was a little confusing.
One match I thought I was 8-0 up after reversing 2 throws and ending up with the guys back but in fact I was 0-8 he scored for the throw but I scored nothing and anther time I did what I believed was the same thing and scored 2 points and lost 4-2 and another time I won 12-0.
Im sure it was all done fairly and that I just didnt really understand what was going on.
Didnt manage to sub anybody either as I couldnt quite work out what I was allowed to do or when.
Chokes were not allowed.
They mentioned entering the British Open a couple of times so im going to check my schedule and if I can get a good amount of Judo in between now and then ill give that a go but I found that because I havent trained that area I was just countering as best I could when I should have been more aggressive.
I did manage to pull off a Tomonagi (excuse spelling) which basically made the whole thing worth while because IMO that is the most awesome move ever developed because James Bond used it too.
I also found out that the reason they call it SOMBO in the UK and not SAMBO is due to the word SAMBO being a racist slur here.

That's great to hear!
Congrats on the tomoenage, as well. Definitely a favorite throw of mine.
