    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    First SOMBO Comp

Ive entered a SOMBO competition on 19th May.

Never trained in SOMBO before but I have been told that shouldnt be a problem.

What might be a problem however is that I only have 9 days to prepare and I am going on holiday on Tuesday and coming back one day before the event.

So my question is thus, What should/Can I drill on my own to prepare?

Ill be doing all the usual strength/conditioning/cardio But technique wise and in particular leg locks/escapes is there anything I could do on my own?

Good luck man. Get some video.

I see from your profile that you're a B/G JJ guy, are you still actively training in a gi?

I'd imagine that'd be a major handicap if you're not used to it, since the jacket makes you more vulnerable to throws and chokes.

Main thing I would do, would be to get as much rolling time in, under the rules you are going to be competing under. That will probably be the biggest hang up. Using the techniquest you are allowed and the time limits. That way you don't get penalties causing you to lose points or anything like that.

    Otherwise, have fun!

In 9 days, specified as exactly 1 day, there's nothing you can do... :-D

If you can get mat time, try to emulate Sambo rules, otherwise just watch a few Youtube videos on leglocks (like Alan Belchers bits from his Immunity course, if they're still up).

Good luck, looking forward the videos!

I still train once a week in a GI.
Not as much as I should and very rarely start standing when I roll in a GI.
Im very difficult to choke generally due to my turtle neck but it is more than likely ill get thrown by somebody half decent.
That happened to me in a No Gi comp a few weeks ago, I still won but I got thrown high and hard before I got the sub.

I did a couple of hours rolling this morning now im off on holiday until Saturday so ill do plenty of cardio, weights , stretching ect... but other than hip escapes im not too sure what I can drill alone that will help.
Might get my wife to pummel and tell her its Spanish dancing?

All this talking of Choking brings up my 1st recommendation review the rules specific to this style of competition. Become very familiar with them as to not DQ your self right away. Other than that relax and enjoy it.

Is it sport rules? Combat? Freestyle?

I've competed internationally in sport and freestyle, and have practiced combat quite a bit.

I think this is surely the most important question. Don't want to start beating on a guy and choking him if it's only sport sambo.

Unrelated side note: sombo is the worst transliteration of all time.

I'm willing to bet it's a sport tournament... I'm competing at the British Open on June 30th in Bedford, and I'm doing sport. A few of my friends and training partners are doing combat, as well.

If you rarely start from the feet in a gi, you're at a SERIOUS disadvantage against the ruleset. The entire ruleset is based on throws and the quality of throws, even combat. If you think you're gonna just wrestle, then you better be able to squat 600lbs and run a 40-yard dash under 5 seconds, because the jacket makes it a bitch to shoot, at least in the conventional sense.

There is very, very little ground time, also.

Since you don't have much time to prepare, I would work a throw or takedown that you like into a number of pinning or submission scenarios. Also work your pin and sub defense. Don't really know what else to say, other than good luck. And I mean that. Sambo is my favorite thing in the world.
