    I'm pretty sure I wasn't.

    mutodori is a last ditched attempt at surviving an encounter against a sword when you're unarmed. Futile? Quite possibly but the study, practice and methodology existed never the less.

    There is an obscure form of modern geomdo that created an empty hand curriculum using only knife hand strikes in sword-style movements.

    It sucked.

    Regarding muto-dori (sword takeaways) - yup, no joke there are a lot of people that practice this stuff including judoka. It's in kime-no-kata. I don't have a problem with it unless they are deluded enough to think it has any significant chance of success.
