I don't understand why you need to understand that to get into a running program. Go to a good specialty running store, get fitted for shoes that fit your feet (and your tendency to pronate or not), problem solved. Don't be buying your shoes online or at the discount sports superstore unless you already know exactly what works for you.

    Neil essentially addressed that point.

Education, understanding the mechanics of running, and, as you identify, buying the right footwear for how you run.

Unless you buy Vivobarefoot's, (or Five fingers) then the whole pronate/supinate/neutral issue is completely void. But I don't recommend venturing into minimalist shoes like these for weighted running.

Good thread - I like the idea of using water as a weight. I've been running with bags of rice (they tend to stay put and mould around your pack) - I might start water bags, as mentioned the benefit is that you can ditch it.

Really timely article for me - doing tough mudder next weekend and got P Company in September so I need to ramp the weight up for that.

    As in Depot Para?.

All arms course or Parachute Regiment?

Eitherway fucking good luck mate. That's one **** of a course.

Have you already worked in a decent pair of boots for tabbing in? I can recommend those I've used in the past and available from Penrith Survival. Let me know as I don't want to be teaching you to suck eggs.

Had a few buddies from the Engineers that ended up dropping out of the all arms course and these were some fit blokes. The RE is notorious for going double tough on their P Company entrants though.

And some good boot socks. Last thing you want is to be paddling in your own sweat for the forced marches.

Just managing to wrestle your swollen feet from your boots is enough to cause mini orgasms! Foot powder and clean socks are the porn of the tabbing world.

Thanks for this. I haven't been running since I left the Army. I tried getting into again, but being the semi-fat bastard I am, I am end up getting hip and knee pain. What do you recommend for trainers? I have a pair of Under Armour and a par of Merrells, but neither seem to work well for me. I tried running in my LPCs (Converse CM8994) and they were slightly better, but running in boots isn't necessary for someone like me any more.

Good no - it's the Para's 10 Tab they open up to civies each year.

    http://www.paras10.com/pcoy-challenge.php

I'm WAY too old to be doing it for real. A group of us are doing it and trying to raise some cash for the Para's charity. Even so - it still looks pretty gruelling
