So while I am running around at night trying to do my job not only do I have to worry about:
The usual issues we all have to worry about (roaming rape gangs, people of color, illegal immigrants, drug crazed teenagers, ect ect ect).
The San Diego Police (who will shoot me if I am holding ANYTHING in my hands while they approach me and I get approached by them frequently enough while working)
Now Now I have to worry about a kitty cat that can
Bound up to 40 feet running
Leap 15 feet up a tree
Climb over a 12 foot fence
Travel many miles at 10 mph
Reach speeds of 50 mph in a sprint

Yeah maybe just maybe I should start using the Armored Guard services that are available to me while working. However I just doubt that some guy making barely more than minimum wage is going to protect me from. These killing machines.
I used to do graveyard shift security patrols in Sorrento Valley and Del Mar, and at weird hours I saw all sorts of animals. Coyotes would wander around the lots, milipedes and other weird crawlies came out, and one time I saw a herd of deer at the site over by UCSD.

What's the best martial art to use against millipedes? I'd assume Sambo, due tot he concentration on leg locks.

Kung fu and ninjutsu teach how to drown them into useful dit da jows and poisons, respectively.

I read an article about a wrestler being attacked by a mountain lion in CA. He attributed his survival to wrestling with his dogs: he was able to hold on and avoid fatal mauling long enough to discourage the cat. You're better off scaring it away, but if it pounces on you, you're not going to halt its momentum with a Kali stick. Better to be a good enough grappler to hold on and avoid bites.

I've got a feeling nothing short of a spear is going to slow one down.

Cobras have been know to whoop ass on African Lions by spitting venom into their eyes. With that in mind, I'd say Bear Mace in all seriousness. That's probably about as good as you can get in places like San Diego where carrying a gun or a spear weill get you all the wrong kinds of attention.

If you're on the trail and you're seriously worried about predators, you could do a lot worse for yourself.

On a personal note, I wouldn't want to harm even an attacking predator if I could help it. Unless the dang thing is right on top of me I'd prefer to discourage it with as litte harm done as possible. JMHO...

Stay home and hide under the bed.

    That way, you won't die.

    Ever.

I've got a walking stick with a hidden spear in the top part, cause I'm a hiking gangster.
