    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Fear not the sprawl...

This is Darren Branch. He's a seriously bad-ass tiny brownbelt under Donald Park/Royler Gracie and he runs Gracie Humaita Cleveland.

He has a strong wrestling background and uses it to eff people up-- most recently winning gold at the 2013 Pan.

I really like his techniques because he's used to being much smaller than his opponent. Check out this video he just put together and tell me what you think.

A month or two ago he showed up at Paragon when I was there. He is super technical and really fun to roll with on the mat.

Nice guy too. Gracie Humaita is lucky to have him.

Seems like a great guy, and I say I should most definitely try this, I almost never shoot.

Great video. I bet this guy is a lot of fun on and off the mat. I see where he is coming from too how people, for whatever reason choose not to drill this technique when it could really save their asses. I have seen the same concept (directional shift) applied to both standing and ground techniques and sometimes a slight change in direction makes all the difference. I'm a pretty small guy, but he looks tiny. How tall is he? Kind of reminds me a little of the comedian Kevin Hart.

Wait so doing an ass-up, legs-together sprawl once a month in my Wing Chun class isn't all I need to be takedown proof?

I have little short legs so I have been using the sprawl into a choke since 2000. It's kind of my signature move, if I had one.

Am I the only person that finds a sitout near impossible in the gi? I hit it no-gi often off a sprawl but for the gi I always turn the corner like in the vid.

Not sure haven't tried it with a gi.

What do you think makes the difference?

Increased friction, I'm assuming. I tend to get stuck and countered more easily as I'm going slower. As a caveat, I also suck so curious if it's a universal problem.
