I have a couple of questions.

    1) Given the current income and PR profile of the sport, please give your definition of "mainstream"--you seem to think MMA isn't already there.

    2) Even if MMA isn't "mainstream" (whatever your definition), why should it be?

You misunderstand me. MMA is entirely mainstream, but I'm not sure it would be had the UFC been surpassed by Pride FC as its biggest and best promotion.

MMA should be mainstream because it's good for the sport. The more widespread and regulated the sport is, the more it will be considered "legitimate", the more top-level athletes will choose to make a career out of it. And so the quality of the sport as a whole is improved.

Yes, but what about the quality of entertainment?

Are you suggesting that the UFC's dominance has made fighters more boring?

It's too commercial now, too mainstream.

It's no longer OUR THING, ya know.

I liked the UFC a lot more before it was mainstream. I liked it when I no one else knew what TapouT was. I liked it when the only people who wore MMA shirts were the ones who trained. I liked it when pay-per-view events were cheaper. I liked it when you would see mixed skill sets go against each other. That was cool. Grappler vs Striker, when grapler didn't know to keep his hands up and striker tapped out when mounted.

    And yes, I loved Pride.

Is anyone else glad its getting more mainstream? Now when I go to watch fights at bars and restaurants, everyone else there look like normal folk. It wasn't too long ago that douchebags wearing Tapout shirts and scowls dominated the crowd. BUT THOSE TWO FREE LESSONS OF MUAY THAI THEY TOOK MEANSTHEY COULD TOTALLY KICK YOUR ASS, BRO!

That being said, Pride was amazing.
