There are a lot of good points made in this thread- pinning is dead sexy. And it's useful. But the one big tipping point for me that is often, the pin is a submission as well. Aside from the usefulness of crushing the wind out of some poor bastard with kesa gatame (eri gatame) and its kin, those are also nifty submissions.

You'll find that in the base position, all those basics- getting your head down, spreading your legs, "walking" it in- they all set up a nasty neck crank. Switching your position to a belly-down position and doing the same "walking" around also adds a ton of pressure to the crank.

Someone already mentioned that pinning should be active, not passive. That's exactly the right idea.

Which pins would be useful in mma? As a wrestler, I know a lot of pins. Too many in fact. But not all pins seem like they'd be useful outside of wrestling.

A very small list off the top of my head:
    Half-Nelson series
    Cradles series
    Guillotine series
    Tilt series
    Armbar series
    Chickenwing series
    Leg Ride series
    Head and Arm series

I had a sensei who was a master of that sort of stuff...he had a crushing sub from any judo osaekomi.

Unfortunately I never really mastered any of them.

Basic to any sort of effective pinning is the ability to use/distribute your weight effectively, regardless of the application (mma, wrestling, judo, BJJ, etc.).

It looks to me like your list is a list of entries to pins (attacks against an opponent in a particular position) rather than pins themselves, which is a good way to look at them. In wrestling, like in Judo, you are trying to turn your opponent onto his back from various defensive postures (typically turtle or flat out in Judo, ref's position or flat out in wrestling (or back exposure points in Free-Style, right? ).

The basic pins taught in Judo or BJJ or wrestling would suffice, and then the ability to switch positions without losing control between them, and then to add in subs from each position either straight up or more normally as a reaction to an opening created by your opponent trying to escape. Then there would be strikes from control positions (pins), and defending strikes, and escapes.

Get the basic pins down pat though, or you won't be able to control your opponent no matter what you want to do to him.
