The US criminal code definition of WMD is much broader than the military definition, and it includes bombing public places.

He'll likely be charged with violation USC 18 -2332 unless they declare him an enemy combatant and he gets handed over to the military and the CIA.

I.E.D. is just a fancy way of saying "bomb." IMO, the term "I.E.D." usage went up after 9/11. I know I learned about it in 2002.

Timothy McVeigh's "bomb" was considered an I.E.D. He was also charged with use of a WMD.

    Partial credit, it's a home-made bomb.

Yeah, it's an American term, and I guess Afghanistan would be the first time the American public would have started to hear about this kind of attack.

Didn't realise McVeigh was charged with the use of a WMD. That was a pretty big bomb though.

Full credit, I saved you from your google laziness.

Sure and it was also home made. People have become used to the shaped IEDS that are always mentioned on the news. People forget that suicide bombers, vehicle bombers and briefcase bombs are considered IEDs.

For what was - statistically at least - a fairly minor incident, this has garnered a fucking huge amount of media coverage. If the aim of your common terrorist is to generate "publicity" then these boys absolutely nailed it.

You've got to look at this in a cultural context too.

While bombings of this size may have been common place in the British Isles due to "the troubles", they are rare, isolated occurances in the USA.

I'm fully aware that there a many places in the world where these types of events have become all but routine. Israel, Iraq, Afghanistan, Belfast, Moscow, et all...

But us Yanks have been somehwat sheltered from this stuff. At least, we only get @ one bad boom a decade. So when it hits home, it hits BIG here.

Also, keep in mind that absent a large body count, the numbers of maimed and injured are pretty serious. The effects of these bombs were nothing short of horrific.

I hope they give that punk the chair.

You know how some of you guys, from your part of the world, don't understand and rant about our gun laws when there is a mass shooting? Take that logic, and apply it to our understanding and ranting about terrorist bombings.
