    NBC: How do Orstralia?

In a bizarre map produced by NBC News, pretty much the whole of Australia is depicted as being ablaze this week.

Although the current bushfires (or wildfires for you 'Murikens) are of a decent size, they are not currently covering the entire Australian continent. Time Magazine decided it that it couldn't let NBC hog all the, err, glory:

What's worth mentioning here is that Time magazine mentioned in an earlier version of its story that New South Wales was in southwestern Australia.Hey, you only missed by 3000km or so guys. That's like putting Washington DC in San Diego. No biggie.

And there were more. We'll let Time's diligent corrections people speak for themselves.
    • An earlier version of this article misstated that New South Wales is in southwestern Australia. It is in southeastern Australia.
    • An earlier version of this article misstated the name of the executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change. She is Christiana Figueres, not Christina.
    • An earlier version of this article misstated the name of a former Prime Minister of Australia. She is Julia Gillard, not Gilliard.

All of which begs the question: Is it that hard for these supposedly reputable American media outlets to write a story getting a few basic facts right about little old Australia?

That's a rhetorical question but we'll answer it anyway. Yes, apparently it is.
NBC's problem was that it took a Geoscience Australia satellite map of every fire currently burning in Australia (including hazard-reduction burns) and assumed they were all part of this week's disaster.

Time's problem could be that they haven't got the hang of the internet yet. Either that or they didn't spend enough of it (time, that is) checking a simple thing called a map.

Australia WTF - It's a weird way to call a prison, but there you have it. How is Taz-mania hanging?

(I'm constantly appalled at things you see and read at mainstream magazines and ex - decent TV channels like Discovery and History. On the net the situation is even worse, but at least you're in total control of what and when do you want to see. And than you just get a massive headache thinking about who decided, that Ancient aliens is something for the deemed serious History channel. Makes me wonder if quality of education, press, lifestyle and all is really degrading at such an alarming rate....)

Not manly enough. We sent Dundee out to the world because we wanted to present a more accessible and softer image to the world for tourism purposes.

All I know about Australia is that I don't want to pick up any critters and walk in HAZMAT armored suit far around the creepers if I happen to plant myself down there (not even in a dream). And to throw a can of Biokill in the room I want to sleep in an hour before nap.

    Stereotypes are fun.

I dunno but the flight from Sydney to Perth is pretty blah: 5+ hours of red desert.

Real Aussies walk from Sydney to Perth. And we do it in half the time your tourist flight takes...
