    Why's almost everyone anti strength training?

    I dunno if I should put this here or in the PT forum. Anyway it seems like every dojo/training gym etc I've looked at around here either has no weight facilities or just circuit training conditioning classes where you have to do what the class does.

    If they're asking you to pay over $100 a month to cover all ranges of unarmed combat under the sun is it too much to ask that they have even just a basic barbell setup?

    You're paying for MA instruction. It's not that they're necessarily against strength training, just that they aren't oriented towards it as much as they are towards improving your abilities as a fighter through MA instruction.

    If you want strength training, find a cheap gym with some free-weights. . .

    MMA gyms around here are usually 5-7 nights a week. You're not getting your money's worth if you have to go somewhere else on top of that

    Maybe not everyone's anti strength training. But it's offerred nowhere. And I spoke to a guy promoting one of the local places. He seemed to think that body weight and kettle bells was all the weights you needed.

    Personally at my size weight and (lack of) strength I'd be stupid not to work on strength and MA skill together.

    JUdo on and off about 3 years
    Lifting a bit less than that. Much more consistent than the judo lately
    I just had to quit judo to go back to school

    . . . I'll admit I'm kind of confused about what your goals are at the moment. Are you lifting to improve your Judo/fighting? Or is the strength training only tangentially related to the MA?

    Based on your height/weight and time in-system, I think you'd get greater benefit to your Judo from technical practice than from the strength training, but I guess I don't know if that's what you're actually looking for at the moment.

    I guess it all depends where you are but i'm guessing it is usually more a matter of student demand and prioritizing class times.
    Heck we have a thread lamenting warm-ups recently.
    To top it off many schools don't have enough qualified instructors/time-slots/floor-space/equipment-budget as it is.

    Our local BJ Penn/UFC gym on the other hand, goes just a tad overboard on the fitness end of things, perhaps.

    I want to be strong and able to kick ass. I'm woefully bad at both so they both need a lot of work. I just can't seem to find a situation where I can work on both at once without spending too much money,.

    Although any further ass kicking skill acquisition will have to wait until after schooling.

    I might also switch judo for something else because class is monday and friday which are the worst for my energy levels. And the current sensei spends too much time talking and tries to cover too many techniques in a class but that's really a tangent

    Does your school have a wrestling team you could join? That would help further your ass-kicking, and likely grant you access to whatever fitness facilities your school has.

    Do you lack the discipline or resourcefulness to do it on your own?
    There's quite a bit you can do on your own, if you're as weak as you say, without spending a lot of money.
