    Training w/ really messed up arms?

    All the cartilage in my wrists is shredded.

    My elbow muscles are all covered in scar tissue and the joint is filled with fluid and there's tons of other bullshit wrong with both elbows.

    I've had two wrist surgeries on the right wrist (the worse one and my dominant one) and they did nothing.

    So, long story short, I can't do any upper body training w/o being in extreme pain. Can't bench, OHP, push-up, pull-up.

    But I REALLY miss weightlifting and martial arts, like REALLY.

    Hitting pads doesn't hurt TOO much but I'm afraid that doing it too much will make the cartilage tears worse! However, HOLDING pads is torture. Ugh. Grappling hurts like hell after grabbing someone for a few seconds. Hell, even pouring out a cup of milk from a full gallon feels like ****.

    But how can I participate in a striking class if I can't hold pads for someone? It'd seem like a cop-out? And if I'm just going to be hitting a bag, why pay a big monthly fee on contract for that? And what's the point of training in striking if I can't grapple as well?

    Someone suggested TKD to me cause it's just kicks and apparently there's a dude who coached in the Olympics (YH Park) who's school is nearby. I checked the site though and it's really McDojo-ey though.

    So, what would you guys do if you were me?

    Doctor said there's basically no chance of me getting better at this point so more surgery is out of the question.

    I'd squat but eventually I'd look like an idiot w/huge legs and an extremely skinny upper body.

    What should I do? I'm just severely depressed over the whole thing :(

    I tore the TFCC in my wrists (TFCC is basically like the meniscus of the wrist but it can't actually be healed) and damaged my elbows from work (constantly on the computer) and trying to be a tough guy and train MMA/BJJ/Weightlifting through the injury w/o going to the doctor (Let one of my friends convince me into being a bullshit holistic medicine, non-doctor guy. ugh.)

    Any ideas on what I should do?

    Looks to me like you are out of gas unless you want to train some Taiji or forms based stuff. Anything with aliveness is going to screw your wrists up more. Sucks. You may want to see a counselor. Since you are going through a big change in your life, they may be able to help you to redirect your interests into something else. Like running or swiming.

    Have you consulted a doctor, preferably an orthopedic one? I would look to a doctor for advice before asking members of a message board.

    Yes, I did. He advised against it. Said if there's pain, do NOT do it.

    I was hoping that you guys had some sort of magic solution.

    Like one of you guys posted a quote once that was like "It's sad that so many people will die without knowing what their bodies are capable of" but now I'll never know. Ugh. 23 and crippled arms. **** lol.

    WTF, IkeH.

    You are still functional. You can do other things. You can swim, you can run, you can dance, you can have hanky panky with the missus. It's a pity you can't do what you liked, but you can transition to other things, and see if you can stick to them.

    There is no need to give up on enjoying yourself just because you can't do martial arts or lift weights. Yours is a hard road, man, but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy the freaking walk as much as you can.

    Or do they dig the opposite...? I forget.

    Anyway I would advise asking someone who actually lifts if you want to try and ease back into lifting, doctors would rather err on the side of caution every time.

    I have a permanent injury too and the advice I received from startingstrength.com helped me ease back into lifting and things are finally just starting to get better. Even though -like you- I was told never to lift or fight again by every doctor I went to.

    I recommend you go and ask around there maybe the coaches trained a similar case or something you never know. They're nice enough to answer questions for free and some of them have an extensive knowledge of biomechanics and ****.

    There may be hope yet, don't give up!

    That's for lifting...

    As for fighting, I still haven't figured that out.
